Geoff came to Manchester with his wife Sylvia in January 2000 to take on the role of Friends International worker here. This is his fourth 'career', and enables him to continue an interest that started when he was studying chemical engineering at Birmingham University in the 1960s. Contact with international students has been a constant part of life since those days, and his full-time role now enables him to link up with some of the 10 000 international students in higher education in Manchester and encourage Christian individuals and groups to do the same. |
Geoff became a Christian as a teenager through the Crusader class in his hometown of Watford (where Sylvia also comes from). He became a Reader in 1977 during 7 years in Formby (Merseyside), helping run a Family Service at 'the church in the pinewoods'. Most of his life has been based in the Midlands area (Coventry) where he and Sylvia were closely involved in setting up a church plant on a local housing estate as well as meeting international students at Warwick University.
He continues his Reader role at Platt, leading services and preaching occasionally. He has recently enjoyed studying for the Trinity College Certificate in TESOL, where his 10 years teaching experience in secondary schools proved helpful. Geoff & Sylvia married in 1967, and have three children (Richard, Kath and Chris) and five grandchildren. Geoff enjoys baking bread, painting Celtic designs and renovating bicycles.
